No. CDC states plainly that HIV is not transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, or other insects. HIV cannot reproduce inside an insect, so a mosquito never becomes a carrier. What health authorities say
CDC's list of ways HIV is not transmitted includes it directly: HIV is not transmitted "by mosquitoes, ticks, or other insects"[1]. UNAIDS gives the reason in one sentence: "Even if the virus enters a mosquito or another sucking or biting insect, it cannot reproduce in the insect. Since the insect cannot be infected with HIV, it cannot transmit HIV to the next human it feeds on or bites"[3]. That's the whole answer — everything below is just the supporting detail.
Why a mosquito can never become a carrier
1. A bite injects saliva, not blood. An archived CDC fact sheet explains that when an insect bites, "it does not inject its own or a previously bitten person's or animal's blood into the next person bitten. Rather, it injects saliva, which acts as a lubricant or anticoagulant"[4]. That fact sheet dates to 1999 and the available copy is hosted by the Center for HIV Law and Policy rather than cdc.gov[5], but the mechanism it describes is basic mosquito biology and unchanged.
2. Diseases that are mosquito-borne travel through that saliva — yellow fever and malaria organisms multiply inside specific mosquito species and reach the salivary glands. HIV does not reproduce, and does not survive, in insects[4]. A peer-reviewed review put it precisely: the virus disappears in the mosquito after about one to two days, the time the insect needs to digest its blood meal, and "since the virus does not survive to reproduce and invade the salivary glands, biological transmission of HIV is not possible"[6].
3. Insects have nothing for HIV to infect. HIV replicates in human CD4 T cells. As aidsmap explains, mosquitoes lack the human T-cells the virus needs to replicate and survive, so they cannot be infected with HIV at all — and even an exposed mosquito can't pass it on, because bites deliver saliva rather than blood[7]. And the amount of blood is nowhere near enough
Set replication aside and imagine pure mechanical carryover — a trace of blood on mouthparts. The numbers still don't work.
HIV levels in human blood are low to begin with; the OTA review noted that serum contains fewer than 10 tissue-culture infectious doses per milliliter, so the minuscule amount of blood a mosquito's mouthparts could carry "would have a low probability of containing even one tissue culture infectious dose of HIV." The review also observed that insect feeding experiments generally used HIV concentrations far above anything achievable in nature[8].
One review ran the arithmetic: for mechanical transmission, a person would have to be bitten by roughly 10 million mosquitoes that had just fed on someone living with HIV to receive a single unit of virus from contaminated mouthparts[6].
Ticks, bedbugs, and other biting insects
The same answer covers all of them. CDC names ticks explicitly alongside mosquitoes and "other insects"[1], and NIH's list reads "ticks, mosquitoes, or other insects"[2] — wording that takes in bedbugs and anything else that bites.
Researchers did study bedbugs and ticks in the 1980s, precisely to close the question. A scientific review of that literature concludes that vector-borne HIV transmission "does not occur at any significant level," based on both epidemiological data and experimental studies[9]. In the feeding experiments, virus concentrations never rose — no replication, no biological transmission — and the doses used were far above real human blood levels[8][9]. CDC also noted that HIV is not found in insect feces, closing another hypothetical route[4].
Decades of surveillance settle it
Mechanism aside, the real-world test has been run for forty-plus years. CDC reported that studies by CDC and others "have shown no evidence of HIV transmission through insects — even in areas where there are many cases of AIDS and large populations of insects such as mosquitoes," and that the absence of such outbreaks, despite intense efforts to detect them, supports the conclusion that insects do not transmit HIV[4]. CDC added that if HIV spread through air, water, or insects, the pattern of reported cases would look completely different from what has actually been observed[4] — HIV cases would not cluster by sexual and injection networks the way they do.
Independent reviews agree. The OTA review found no evidence that insect transmission causes HIV infections in temperate zones or even in tropical climates[8], and the later peer-reviewed review concluded there is "still no evidence of arthropod transmission of the HIV virus"[6].
Florida: HIV has never been on the mosquito list
Few states watch mosquitoes as closely as Florida. The Florida Department of Health publishes a weekly arbovirus surveillance report tracking endemic mosquito-borne viruses — West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus, and St. Louis encephalitis virus — along with exotic viruses including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, plus malaria. Through week 32 of 2026, the state had reported 23 locally acquired dengue cases[10].
That list is the point. Florida takes mosquito-borne disease seriously enough to count cases every single week — and HIV has never appeared on it. Mosquitoes carry the viruses that can replicate inside them and reach their salivary glands. HIV is not one of those viruses[3]. So in the sweatiest, buggiest corners of the state, mosquito bites are worth preventing for dengue and West Nile — never for HIV.
