At the end of 2023, 128,497 people were living with HIV in Florida, and 4,725 people were newly diagnosed that year.[2] Nobody should have to guess where to turn.

Cuts to Ryan White, PEPFAR, and federal HIV prevention programs are on the table. Ryan White alone reaches more than 600,000 people — over half of everyone diagnosed with HIV in this country — and 91.4% of its clients in HIV medical care were virally suppressed in 2024.[3] That is what is at stake.

Most HIV medications are backed by a patient assistance program for people without insurance, or a co-payment program for people whose insurance leaves a bill behind.[4] No coverage, high co-pays, or a gap between plans — there is usually a way through. Here is how to find and apply.

Losing a job, being dropped from Medicaid, or waiting out a coverage gap does not have to mean stopping treatment. Your options include ADAP, which provides FDA-approved HIV medications to people with low incomes and limited or no insurance.[5] Here is the step-by-step.

In 2013, Kevin launched the No Shame About Being HIV+ campaign — a global invitation for people living with HIV to tell their own stories, on their own terms. It ran through 2017 and reached millions. The RiseUpToHIV Story Hub carries that spirit forward: a home for community voices, lived experience, and the kind of honesty that changes how people think.

RiseUpToHIV is an independent HIV education and advocacy project created by Kevin Maloney, a person living with HIV who has called Florida home for 16 years and has worked in HIV advocacy for more than a decade.
When the Florida ADAP crisis left thousands of Floridians without medication assistance, Kevin watched people struggle to find out where care even existed. This site was built to close that gap — and to make sure the next person does not have to search alone.
Undetectable = Untransmittable. A person living with HIV who takes treatment as prescribed and maintains an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV.[6] Across HPTN 052, PARTNER, and Opposites Attract, researchers recorded no linked transmissions from a partner with a durably suppressed viral load.[7]
